What are Development Squads?
The Development Squad is an invitation only program. Players are selected by the teaching professionals based on improvement, work ethic and willingness to learn and adapt to teaching suggestions. Players must also be demonstrating an interest in playing tournaments and competing.
We do not label the squads and the players are grouped based on which type of tournament they are playing. As long as a group is moving through the tournament levels together a player will not move from one group to another (exception would be a player excelling or struggling to play at the level placed).
Squad members are required to work towards specific goals that are clearly set with the teaching staff (and written on our goal sheet for the player). The other benefit of being in a squad is the extensive personal game review given by the players assigned pro. We make use of video analysis to give the player a clear picture of what they need to be working on.
Our Squads are broken into groups based on which tournaments the players are ready for. Type of tournament:
Quickstart (60 foot)
These players are playing 10 & under, 60 foot court USTA sanctioned tournaments. The court is modified to 60 feet (regulation is 78 feet), the ball is lower compression (to increase rallying ability) and the scoring is abbreviated to play shorter matches. The format is normally a team event where individual matches are added to a team score. A Quickstart 10 & under event is played on one day in a 2-3 hour time period.
Level 3
These players are playing USTA sanctioned Level 3 tournaments which are round robin format. They are designed to get players interested in tournament play in a non-threatening environment. The emphasis is on learning to compete and enjoying the matchplay experience. A level 3 tournament is played in one day over a 3 hour period. Scoring is abbreviated so the player gets to play more matches and different players.
Level 2
These players are playing USTA sanctioned Level 2 tournaments which are knock out events. If you win you move on in the draw, if you lose you are out of the event. Players are able to earn ranking points for their section. The scoring format is best of three sets and the event is played over a weekend, usually starting on a Friday night.
Level 1
These players are playing USTA sanctioned Level 1 tournaments which are knock out events. This is the highest level of tournament play for their section and players have already been excelling in the level 2 tournaments before they would play this type of event. The scoring format is best of three sets and the event is played over a weekend, usually starting on a Friday night.
